| | Who here is old enough to remember.... | | Okay so I'm sitting home stuck in this terrible blizzard that has hit us here in southern new jersey really hard and I've been mylotting all day. I finally decided to get comfy in my bed with the laptop and relax and I turn on the television to find a sho called Roc Docs which I have never seen before. On this episode they are celebrating 40 years of the show Soul Train.
Who here remembers that show?? Or do you know someone who does? I know I do! It was the "Hippest Trip in America"[em]thumbup[/em]Don Cornelius was the coolest dude. I remember all the moves you ever wanted to learn you could learn on Soul Train. Some like to refer to it as the Ethnic "American Bandstand"
Soul Train not only allowed local teens to let loose and dance he also had stars like Gladys Knight, Eddie Lavert, and Curtis Mayfield on the show to perform live while dancers enjoyed and danced to the music. It has lasted 40 years and now showcases artists of today and todays hippest styles and dances! It was a great show back then and today and brings back great memories!
| | My friends who grew up in or close to Canada | | like I did...I used to listen to Canadian radio alot. There was a station I loved--CKLW. Besides the traditional hits and oldies of the day--say your Motown, your Gladys Knight and the Pips, Stevie Wonder, Glen Campbell, and others--they played songs from an alternative CanCon list--a list that included Edward Bear, Buster Brown ("Falling Out of Love"--1974), Andy Kim ("Shoot'Em Up Baby"), "Get Back on the Right Track"(Carlyle Miller), Lisle ("Shelly Made Me Smile"), and Chester (the super-awesome Summer 1973 hit "You Make My Life A Little Bit Brighter"--one of my favourite, very catchy, pick-me-up songs from that era). Anyone ever heard of these acts? What are some of your old Canadian favourites? In a way, these are songs that were overlooked by the big U.S. Stations that were good.Let me lay on another one from summer '73 that was one of my favourites. The late Kenny Hollis and Copperpenny came out that year with "Sittin' On a Poor Man's Throne" (a tune I can readily relate to.)And the list goes on.Anyone out there can relate? | |
| | Wow, what a fantastic American Idol finale it was! | | I thought American Idol's 2008 Finale was just great! So many musicians, ZZ Top, Gladys Knight, Donna Summer, Graham Nash, Jonas Brothers, etc.I liked the addition of comedy to it: Mike Myers a.k.a. the Love Guru and Jimmy Kimmel were really good. I think that David Cook will go on to be at least as successful as Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry, what do you think?PearlGrace | |
| | American Idol 2008 Winner, David Cook | | Wow, what an incredible American Idol finale it was this year!Season 7 was just fantastic! Couldn't believe all the musicians that were on it: Donna Summer, Jonas Brothers, ZZ Top, Carrie Underwood, George Michael, Graham Nash, Seal, Bryan Adams, old video of Gladys Knight, and so many others. Oh, plus the comedy of Mike Myers a.k.a. Guru Pitka--the Love Guru and Jimmy Kimmel. It just gets better and better every year.I think both Davids are fantastic singers, but their styles are really different. Even though David Cook won, there's no doubt of the success that David Archuleta will have. David Cook is such a rocker, and he sounds a little like Chris Daughtry, don't you think? I can't wait to hear his first album. And it was fun to see the other "Idols" from this season. His song, "This is the Time" will probably be a big hit.So, what did you think about who won? How do you think they'll do in the music business? It should be exciting to watch. Tell me what you think.PearlGrace | |

| | Name your saddest jam | | OK, I was on Amazon.com and they mentioned saddest ol'school(classic for those of you who don't know)jams, and I had to reply. SOO..... I am starting one over here. You know them, you probably grew up or heard of them. But name some of the saddest jams(songs) if you want to add a memory, ok, if not alright. Here is mine.
Ordinary People-John Legend. a great song, but around the time this song came out, I lost someone very dear to me and it just triggers that memory to this day.
It Takes a Fool(that Love Don't Love Nobody)-The Spinners. I remember hearing this song as a child and the late Philippe Wynn would sing that song in a way that not too many can come close to it, though I must say Tyler Perry made a stab at it in Madea Goes to Jail. that's one of them songs that make you want to pay attention and learn something along the way.
Midnight Train to Georgia. Gladys Knight and her Pips. Every time I think about this, I think about some lonely fella who tries to hit the big city but can't get used to it and decides to head back home to Georgia.
Ok, I started it, keep it going.
